The Fayette County Sheriff's office confirms a four-year-old boy dies after accidentally shooting himself Friday.

This happened at a home in Elgin.

According to reports, the boy's mom and two children were visiting a friend at the Elgin home.

The Fayette County Sheriff, Marty Fisher, says the four-year-old, as well as a younger child, were left inside while the mother and friend stepped outside.

This is when the gun was fired.

Locals in Elgin tell KWWL the boy's mother and friend did not have cell phones, forcing the mother to run and find help.

She ran across the street to a local bar, pleading somebody to call 911. The sheriff's office says two 911 calls were made, reporting a child had been shot and a child was unconscious.

A local business owner was first at the scene, telling KWWL what he saw.

He says the boy appeared to have shot himself in the face.

He continued to say more local business owners started arriving, one giving the boy CPR after he stopped breathing.

The sheriff's office reports an ambulance took the child to Palmer Hospital in West Union where he later died.

The sheriff says the gun belonged to the home owner, who was not home at the time of the accident.

At this time the boy's name has not been released.

The community organized a candlelight vigil in Elgin Park  to honor the little boy and his family. It starts at nine o'clock on Sunday night.
