Illegal immigrant charged with sexually abusing child

WEST UNION (KWWL) -

UPDATE: An illegal immigrant is accused of sexually assaulting a young girl multiple times.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Offices says Pedro Ramon Candido is responsible for sexually assaulting an 11 year old girl.

Candido is being held in the Fayette County Jail without bail, charged with two counts of sexual assault.

The sheriff's department has been investigating this sexual assault for weeks, but it is a nightmare the young girl, now 14 years old, has been living for several years.

Authorities say,  Pedro Candido is a sexual predator who should not be in this country.

Working as a farm hand in the West Union area, Candido is an acquaintance of the victim's family.

Using his position to sexually abuse the young girl when she was 11 and then again when she was 12.

Although the details of the case are not public, Sheriff Marty Fisher says the accounts told by the victim are hard for even someone as experienced as him to hear.

"What that child has to go through for the rest of her life and yea, it is tough," said Fisher.

Charged with two counts of sexual assault, the investigation into Candido isn't finished.

A resident of West Union for the last 4 to 6 years, but in Eastern Iowa for at least the last decade, authorities say it is hard to track any criminal record Candido might have because of his lack of documentation; making it easy for Candido to switch identities.

But investigators did link Candido to a 2002 identity theft charge in Clayton county. Candido allegedly used the name "Erasto Garcia" at the time.

During the 2002 case, Candido's illegal status was unknown.

The sheriff's department is looking into the possibility of other victims and other crimes.

"This child was abused and there may be other victims out there. It is important that all of our citizens are aware of what is going on in their neighborhoods. If there are other victims out there, this may inspire them to come forward," said Fisher.

Sheriff Marty Fisher wanted to stress that Candido could have been going by a different name. If there are other victims, they might not recognize the name, but hopefully the face.

The Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs is involved with the case. Candido faces deportation following a trial and possible prison time if convicted.
