Blood drives around Iowa pop up days after Orlando shooting

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Blood banks in Iowa see a slight increase after the Orlando shooting.

The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center held multiple drives Wednesday.

Experts say just one location can collect enough blood to save 80 people.

Even drive coordinators gave blood, and saw some regulars return to drive sites.

"I've accumulated a lot of people that give blood on a regular basis," said coordinator Dan Powicki after giving blood himself. "So I just contact them, see if they can come in and donate blood at this particular time of the year, and it happens every nine weeks so we're constantly giving blood to help people save lives."

The blood collected at the drives won't go to Florida victims -- experts say blood donated before the shootings is helping them.

But coordinators say the attack is inspiring more to donate.
