Waverly family wakes up to a foot of water in their basement

A tornado also reported in Bremer County last night -- about three miles northeast of Shell Rock.

No damage or injuries reported.

Parts of Bremer County are still cleaning up from storms over the weekend.

Waverly was one of the many towns hit by the storm yesterday.

But for this city, it was the rain this past weekend that flooded many homes.

The city says some homes flooded more than they did during the 2008 floods.

One family I spoke with ended up getting about a foot of water in their basement.

Maggie Benschoter remembers waking up to to this. "My daughter started crying from her room, so I got up to see what she needed and when I stepped down off our bed, my feet were covered in water," she said.

By the end, the family's 3-month-old baby's room was ruined.

A lot of the family's belongings now have water damage.

The family's baby is coughing and has an eye infection. Doctors say the baby can't stay in the home until it's been checked for asbestos and black mold.

The family says not only the weather, but also the city may have caused their flooding problem.

"They're doing this million dollar dry run project to prevent flooding in Waverly. It appeared that they have built a dam of dirt to keep back any water while they were working on the other side of the dry run. That dam was holding back all of this water, which eventually pulled up over the tracks into our yard," Benschoter said.

KWWL spoke with the city. They say people all over Waverly have experienced flooding. At this point, they don't know what caused flooding at any specific home, but continue  to investigate this case and many others.
