Des Moines' Capital City Pridefest continued its celebration as planned, after news of the mass shooting at an Orlando gay nightclub Sunday morning.

People at Des Moines' Pridefest said they were scared and saddened by the Orlando shooting, but they said they felt it was important to still attend the local festival as a sign of solidarity with the LGBT community in Orlando and nationwide.

The shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando killed 50 people, and authorities have called the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. National media reports say the lone shooter likely had ties to the Islamic State terrorist group.

This month is National LGBT Pride Month, and Orlando had just recently celebrated its annual gay pride festival.
