Roundabout construction project underway in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The city of Dubuque is getting it's first roundabout.

It's currently being added at the five-way intersection of North Grandview Avenue, and Delhi and Grace Streets.

"We have issues with delay through this intersection, with the five, five stop signs right now, it does cause delay, especially at school arrival, school dismissal times," said Jon Dienst, civil engineer for Dubuque

Dubuque's engineering department says they're trying to improve safety and flow at the busy intersection, but before that happens, people in the area will have to deal with construction for the next couple of months.

Drivers are trying to maneuver around this construction and some are finding it difficult.

"The real major inconvenience right now is a little delay for some people depending the time of day because we don't have access down Delhi street or down Grace Street on the west side of this intersection," Dienst said.

Also, the intersection is surrounded by homes, several businesses and Finley Hospital.

Some neighbors say once the roundabout is complete, they're concerned about how ambulances will get through during an emergency.

The single-lane roundabout is scheduled to be completed in August.

However, Dubuque plans on adding three more roundabouts on University Avenue in about five years.
