Board of Regents approve process for new UNI president

With a sudden presidential vacancy, the Iowa Board of Regents meet to devise a plan to find the new leader of one the state's largest universities.

They met Thursday in Ames to honor former UNI President Bill Ruud for his service while leading the university in Cedar Falls for three years.

During the meeting, the regents officially accepted Ruud's resignation, named the interim, and decided to approve the process of looking for a new permanent replacement.

Ruud is leaving to the president at Marietta College in Ohio.

University Provost Jim Wohlpart officially becomes the interim Thursday, even though he's been serving in the position since earlier in the month.

Even though he's moving on, he says he still plans to keep in contact with the folks in Iowa.

But as of Thursday, he's officially no longer the president of UNI.

Through a roll call among the regents, they honored him on his three years of service.

"I'm not going to sever any ties to Iowa. I'm going to sneak back every now and then. Ben Jacobson has already got me tickets for the Xavier game when Northern Iowa plays in Cincinatti after Thanksgiving, so I'm committed to that," Ruud said.

He said the school will always have a special place in his heart.

"You come here and you love a place. You cut a little piece of your heart out and leave it here. My folks at the University of Northern Iowa know I will continue to refer to it as the University of Nothing Impossible," Ruud said.

Following President Ruud's report, the board of regents, including president Rastetter, thanked him for his service by commenting on improved enrollment and fund-raising efforts.

Like President Ruud said, he increased attendance and even surpassed a fund-raising goal by $8 million ahead of schedule.

He's set to take over Marietta in July.

The board says their next step includes deciding a process to hire a new replacement.
