AMES (WHO) -

About 80 residents were evacuated from an Ames apartment after a fire broke out about 4 a.m. Monday.

About a dozen fire trucks are on scene at the Oak Ridge apartments, at 301 Fourth Street, just southeast of the Hy-Vee on Grand Avenue.

Channel 13's Josh Nguyen reports that between 75 and 80 people, mostly students, made it out safely. Firefighters had to rescue some residents from their balconies since the fire spread to the hallway.

Nguyen reports that many of the residents are foreign exchange students. All the tenants were required to purchase renters insurance before moving in. The apartment manager is working to move displaced residents to other properties.

Fire officials are still putting out flames and have not been able to get into the building to determine the cause.
