Iowa officers create campaign to prevent dangerous situations

Posted: Updated:

The Ames Police Department is trying a new approach to connect with the community.

The department is rolling out its social media campaign called "picture gAmes." The campaign is aimed at getting people to look up from their cell phone and notice their surroundings.

Every week the department will post a picture of well known places around town on Facebook – and residents are encouraged to post what they think it is.

Officers say the campaign will also help keep people safe.

"We're just one bad day from somebody making a mistake or a headline hitting the newspaper that isn't favorable to us, and we gotta do everything we can to connect with people ahead of time so the conversation's already started," said Officer Eric Snyder of the Ames Police Department. "So when something like that happens, those lines of communication are already there."

The department also hopes the campaign improves connections with the community to help maintain its trust.
