DES MOINES (KWWL) -

A former Iowa governor's final resting place is restored.

Samuel Merrill was Iowa's seventh governor. He died in 1899.

In the more than 100 years since his death, animals, vandals and weather have caused damage to Merrill's mausoleum.

A ribbon cutting Sunday honored the restoration efforts.

"Governor Merrill served our nation and Iowa led the way with the highest number of volunteers in the Union Army to help preserve the nation," said Governor Branstad. "Not only did he do that he was wounded and came back and served as governor for this state."

An Iowa historian helped raise nearly $50,000 to repair the mausoleum.
