CVG plant closure means layoffs in Edgewood

EDGEWOOD (KWWL) -

What was once a bustling factory here in the small town of Edgewood, is no more.

The manufacturing company, Commercial Vehicle Group, Incorporated -- known as CVG is closing it's doors.

That means lay offs for numerous workers. "I know a number of the people, and they are optimistic too about their futures about  what can come from being laid off," said  Elise Bergan, Edgewood economic development coordinator.

Cvg is a company that makes cable harnesses for vehicles used in construction and farming, but as a way to cut overhead costs, operations stopped at the facility at the end of May. That means about 60 employees have been laid off.

The Edgewood Chamber of Commerce says it's one of the town's largest employers. "We are concerned about the loss of those people coming to work everyday and spending money in the town, we're hoping that we can continue with that, with a new company, a new opportunity and kind of keep those people coming to  Edgewood," added Bergen.

Economic leaders are now trying to find another company to move into the facility a soon as possible. They don't want to see foot traffic, especially in the downtown area decrease.

Here is a statement from CVG regarding the closure:

The Edgewood closure was consistent with the original WARN notice that we filed earlier this year  The transfer of production from the facility affected approximately 60 positions.  The manufacturing transition was complete by the end of May, although a handful of resources remain on the job through the middle of June to assist with the facility.  Since the original announcement was made, we have worked closely with the Iowa Workforce Development agency on the implementation of the benefits and services available to our employees under Trade Adjustment Assistance Program.  The Company is grateful for the commitment and contributions of the team during this transition period.
