Strawberry Point iconic restaurant reopening soon

Posted: Updated:

A small-town Iowa restaurant is almost back in business, after a fire destroyed the building earlier this year.

The iconic Back Home Country Cookin' restaurant in Strawberry Point caught fire January 17.

Now, next to the giant strawberry in town, stands a bright red building, which is the new Back Home Country Cookin'.

The past several months have been an emotional journey for owner, Brenda Landis.

"Support from the community has been amazing, the first few weeks up to today really. They did a benefit for us, we had about 600 people."

People now are working anxiously to reopen, as crews are cleaning and focusing on the finishing touches ahead of hungry crowds.

Landis calls the January fire a blessing in disguise, in a way. Now, she has a new bar and counter in the restaurant, a bigger kitchen and a new party room for banquets and extra guests.

For the town of Strawberry Point, the fire doesn't define the story of this local spot.

"What tells it is when people start coming back in, sharing their families and a piece of pie, enjoying our food and company. It's a big home basically," Landis said.

The big home now has another meaning, especially for Landis.

"Now we're coming back home after the fire."

Landis hopes to reopen this coming Wednesday, June 8.
