Clayton County Auditor retires months before end of term

CLAYTON COUNTY (KWWL) -

Embattled Clayton County Auditor Dennis Freitag has retired, according to staffers in his office.

Staffers found a note on his desk this morning that read, "I have reached 62 years of age and have decided to retire. The Clayton County auditor position is hereby vacated by me as of May 31, 2016."

Freitag's term was not set to end for a few months still.

Freitag had been Clayton County's Auditor for 40 years, but came under fire recently as he spent more time away from the office to take care of his ailing wife, who passed away in February.

Now his spot will be filled in the Nov. 8 elections.

Republican Deborah Scott has filed for the office, and will face the winner of the Democratic primary on Tuesday, June 7.  Candidates Jennifer Garms and Elizabeth Jaster will compete for the other spot on the November ballot.
