Some calling for Ames art piece to be removed

Posted: Updated:

Some call it art. Others call it inappropriate.

Not everyone is happy with this new sculpture in Ames. It's part of the city's annual outdoor sculpture exhibition.

The artist says the woman is doing a yoga pose. Some think it looks more suggestive than that, especially as subject is not wearing clothes. The artist says she doesn't see "nakedness," she just sees a shape.

"I think it's disgraceful  - there's nothing sacred anymore," said Peg Lowary, who lives in Ames.

"Definitely a provocative and potentially suggestive pose," said Ryan Buck, who lives in Ames.

For now, the city plans to keep it up.

"As a piece, it's still very strong and very powerful," said Kerry Anne Dixon, Chairwoman of the Ames Public Art Commission.

It will be taken down and replaced with a new piece next May.
