Waterloo Police Officer hits man crossing street

A local man is recovering in the hospital after being struck by a police car.

It happened at the intersection of 11th and Jefferson Streets in Waterloo on Friday, just before 9:30 p.m.

An on-duty Waterloo police officer struck a 73-year-old man who was crossing the street.

According to investigation documents from the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office, Officer Meho Suljic was driving the squad car.

According to the report, the officer was turning left from Jefferson onto 11th Street. He saw the man seconds before the collision.

The man was hit straight on and was thrown several feet, according to the report.

The big question, was the man walking in the cross walk? According to Officer Suljic, the man wasn't in the cross walk. The man says he was.

According to Waterloo police, Officer Suljic is resuming his regular duties during the investigation .

KWWL spoke with the 73-year-old man over the phone. He says he has several broken ribs, bruises, and road rash. He expects to be released from the hospital Thursday.

At this time the incident is still under investigation by the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office.
