Expect traffic in Iowa City as Gateway Project construction begins

Posted: Updated:

Get ready for traffic delays in eastern Iowa. A major road construction project begins today.

It involves one of the busiest roads in Iowa City -- Dubuque Street. Expect 15 to 30 minute delays during busy travel times.

Today, lane shifts are expected to begin on Park Road. Lane reductions are expected on Dubuque Street today and traffic will be reduced to one lane for a bit at the beginning of June. You can find more information here.

This is all part of the Iowa City Gateway Project. Eventually, Dubuque Street will be raised ten feet, putting it above the 100-year flood level.

In 2013 and 2014, flooding closed the street for weeks. During the historic 2008 flood, the street closed for more than a month. it also closed back in 1993.

Construction will continue throughout the summer. Parts of this project won't wrap up for another two years.

Dubuque Street connects to Interstate 80 and it's the street a lot of people use when coming to the University of Iowa. The university is reminding students and visitors there are other exits off the interstate which will let them get to campus.

The city says every day, about 25,000 cars travel the stretch of Dubuque Street which will be under construction.
