CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

We are nearly a week away from the primary election.

In the First Congressional District Race, Monica Vernon and Pat Murphy are battling it out for the democratic nomination.

The winner between Vernon and Murphy will take on Republican Incumbent Rod Blum.

The First Congressional District is the North-Eastern part of the state, and a large portion of the KWWL viewing area.

"I want to go to congress to make a difference, make life better for people," Vernon told KWWL.

"We have to send Rod Blum packing, he is not voting to invest in our people," she said.

Vernon listed a few key issues she is focusing on including the economy, protection of social security and Medicare, and education.

"We need to make sure that our kids aren't strapped with unbelievable debt coming out of college and training programs," Vernon said.

Vernon says her campaign is working hard to have the  resources available to reach out to people, admitting, some of those resources have even come from republicans.

"A lot of these people are just, are friends of mine I think it's important to not get so wrapped up in the partisan labels," she said.

"The vast majority of those resources have come from democrats but I think to have everybody that's how you work across the aisle and get things done," she added.

Right now Vernon says her campaign has momentum and it's something she is taking in.

"It seems like you can't go anywhere without someone stopping to talk about the campaign and so I love that I love it, I can't get through to Hy-Vee anymore," she said.

Vernon also told KWWL she will stand up for women and children, and she believes in equal pay for equal work.
