Clean-up efforts underway after storm causes damage

DUBUQUE COUNTY (KWWL) -

A thunderstorm moves through Dubuque County, leaving Sageville Elementary School in shambles.

"About half of the building has severe water damage, the roof came down in the storm and all of the water has come down from the top floor of the building down from the basement," said Jean McDonald, principal at Sageville.

Pieces of wet insulation all over the place...water leaking into classrooms, and staff trying to save school supplies. "But the water keeps leaking down one level, to the next level. Everybody quickly got technology, textbooks, we wanted to try to salvage those as soon as possible," McDonald added.

Wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour also creating problems for Linda Schroeder in Peosta. A large tree snapped in half, falling on her house. "And our neighbor called us and said that we had a tree on the house, so right away we jumped in the car and came home," she said.

But she's fortunate. "And so far it doesn't look like there's too much damage on the inside...naturally on the outside there is," Schroeder added.

Meanwhile, the damage at Sageville is a setback for them. Principal McDonald says they completed a renovation four years ago, so this is devastating.

Sageville school officials say they have a lot of work ahead of them. Workers placed a temporary tarp on the roof, in case it rains again.

School is set to resume on Wednesday
