Storm causes damage at Sageville Elementary School, classes cancelled Tuesday

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Sageville Elementary School in Dubuque is picking up the pieces after a storm swept through the building.

"About half of the building has severe water damage, the roof came down in the storm and all of the water has come down from the top floor of the building down from the basement," said Jean McDonald, principal at Sageville.

On Saturday, thunderstorms and winds as high as 60 miles per hour ripped through Dubuque County, causing the school's roof to blow off.

But that's not all -- there's also damage on the inside.

"The water keeps leaking down from one level to the next level," added McDonald.

Staff is now clearing out classrooms airing them out, trying to save as many books and computers as possible.

It's an unfortunate situation for the school. Not too long ago, they underwent a renovation. "Four years ago, we completed a renovation of this building...so it's devastating to see it in this fashion," McDonald said.

Just when the school year should be winding down, the staff here is busier than ever.

School officials say classes are now cancelled for students on Tuesday, May 31st. Staff is still to report at regular time.
