Man found seriously injured in Iowa City alleyway

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Police are looking for any information surrounding what happened to Ryan Jansa.

Jansa is in a coma after he was found unconscious in an alleyway in downtown Iowa City around 6 a.m. on Saturday.

The alleyway is located behind The Union bar.

Police are investigating the cause of Jansa's injuries, but right now they say they are not looking at the incident as an assault.

Jansa's family says they just want answers.

"He's had trauma on both sides of his head, a fractured neck, fractured wrist," said Andrea Woodard, Jansa's sister.

Friends last saw Jansa at The Fieldhouse around 1:30 a.m.

His family says he was talking to a different group of people at the bar, possibly a girl, when his friends left to grab some food.

When Jansa was found, he was taken to the hospital.

"They had put him through surgery removed some of his skull to relieve the swelling from his brain," said Woodard.

She says her brother even had a small piece of his brain removed.

Police say they are working to find answers, and the family is as well.

"We're sitting here worried about our little brother and just praying that someone can help us find out how this happened and because he, we don't know if he will remember when he wakes up," Woodard told us.

She says her brother will survive, but they are not sure what condition he will be in when he wakes up.

The family says Jansa is able to move his arms and legs.

If you have any information you can contact the Iowa City Police Department.

Jansa's family has created a Caring Bridge page online, where they are posting updates on his condition, you can view that page here: https://www.caringbridge.org/visit/ryanjansa
