East's Roberts captures title on record setting day at Drake

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

Kerris Roberts wasn't even sure if she would compete in track. Her basketball coach changed her mind, and as a result, the Waterloo East freshman set a Drake Relays record on her very first try, and again on her second.

Roberts was the top qualifier coming out of the 100 meter prelims runner in a Drake Relays record 12.04 seconds. She was even faster in the final, smoking the field in 11.77 seconds, the 3rd fastest time ever run in the state of Iowa.

"I know I'm running against seniors, girls who have been doing this for a long time, reigning champions," said Roberts, "So I said you're not going to settle for less than 3rd place. I got first, so it's obviously great to exceed my own expectations."

That wasn't the only record that fell by the wayside. The Cedar Rapids Jefferson girls 4 x 200 meter relay set a new record running the second fastest time in state history. The J-Hawks, anchored by senior Jasmine Blue, captured the title in 1:40.94 seconds. With the win, the Cedar Rapids Jefferson program now owns the top 3 4 x 200 times in the state.

On the boys side, Cedar Rapids Prairie took down Drake's top mark in the Sprint Medley. Senior Jalen Rima ended the 400 meter leg in first, handing off to Tyler Vandraska, who did the rest capturing the Relays championship in 3:35.94.
