Hawkeyes Looking For Bigger Role From Scheel

Posted: Updated:

Former Union Knight star Jay Scheel hasn't seen much playing time in his first two years at Iowa.  After being redshirted his freshman year due to injury Scheel found himself buried on the depth chart.  With the graduation of Tevaun Smith and Jacob Hillyer, Scheel is now  fully healthy and the offense expects big things from the prep school quarterback.

"Jay Scheel has really taken a jump over the last three or four practices now and he has got himself into the mix where he can play a couple different positions." Said offensive coordinator Greg Davis.  "I think he's finally healthy for the first time and he's playing with some confidence."

Scheel expects to see work in the mix at receiver which includes last season's leading receiver Matt Vandenberg, red shirt senior and Dubuque Wahlert grad Riley McCarron and true sophomore Jerminic Smith.

Davis says that he likes Scheel's versatility and that being a former quarterback he has a better understanding of defenses.

"I mean he can play either of the two outside spots and not miss a beat."  Davis continued.  "He's smart being a former quarterback he kind of understands what defenses are trying to do."

Scheel and the rest of the Hawkeyes take to Kinnick Stadium for the annual spring game Saturday at 1 o'clock.
