Lacking laughs: half of Americans say they don't have enough fun

(NBC) - The weekend is almost here, and for many of us that means more time to relax and have fun.

But according to a recent survey conducted by Stanford University, it seems many Americans have a bit of a fun gap.

97 percent of adults surveyed felt having fun in daily life was important, but only half said they had enough fun in their lives.

Three quarters of people listed spending time with family as their favorite way to have fun, followed by seeing friends, eating out and taking a road trip.

Most men and women said better mental health was the biggest benefit of having fun, and that more frequent, inexpensive moments of fun were better than having fewer (but bigger) fun activities.

According to the survey, July was considered the most fun month of the year, with Saturday coming in as the most fun day, and evenings as the most fun time of day.

At the bottom of the so-called "fun list" was the month of December, Mondays and mornings.
