Evidence: Cop charged with murder consumed by marital woes

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) -- Prosecutors will be permitted to tell jurors that a police officer charged with murder for shooting a man during a 2013 domestic standoff questioned himself about whether he acted out of anger over a deteriorating marriage.

Defense lawyers for former Fairfax County police officer Adam Torres argued unsuccessfully Thursday at a pretrial hearing that the statement should be barred from Torres' murder trial, which begins April 18.

Prosecutors want to tell jurors about a series of statements Torres made before and after the August 2013 shooting of John Geer about Torres' arguments with his wife and their effect on his state of mind.

Torres told detectives that he wondered "for a split second" whether he fired out of anger but quickly concluded in his own mind the shooting was justified.
