Hawkeye Football ready to start spring

Posted: Updated:

The Hawks have a lot to be excited about with 14 starters including several key players returning from a team that won a school record 12 games and played in the Rose Bowl.

The Hawks return starting quarterback CJ Beathard and all-American cornerback Desmond King. And even more important Iowa returns a lot of the players who bought into the philosophical changes that were implemented by coach Kirk Ferentz and his staff.

The Hawkeyes return more than half the starters from the team that won the Big Ten West title and played in the conference championship game--- Ferentz says there was clear reason for the Hawkeyes' success.

Kirk Ferentz said, "

We're certainly in a little different situation than a year ago. We had a lot of question marks about how guys would produce in game situations. To your point, at least we've seen all these guys in a game situation now. But that being said, there is a lot of growth to be had.

One of the reasons we had a successful football team last year was that we did improve. Our oldest guys played like our oldest guys, and whether you look at it that way or how they progressed from March till December, they improved there too. So that's going to be -- that's always kind of been the theme and it will remain that way"

Hawkeye spring practices begin Wednesday.
