DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A competency hearing has been granted for a Dubuque man accused of sexually assaulting and beating a church secretary to death.

Our coverage partners, the TH Media report the attorney of 20-year-old Helmon Betwell filed a motion last week seeking a competency hearing based on an evaluation by a doctor.  The report states Betwell has a mental disorder and is unable to understand the charges against him, affecting his ability to stand trial.

Betwell is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual assault for the Sept. 1 death of 66-year-old Nancy Krapfl, of Dubuque. He is also charged with two counts of third-degree burglary.

The competency hearing is set for April 4.
