Study suggests your health problems could be traced back Neanderthal genes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (NBC) -

New research suggests we can blame some health problems on some ancient ancestors.

A Vanderbilt University study compared genes from the long-extinct Neanderthal population to health records of 28,000 adults with European ancestry. Scientists found the ancient DNA had a significant influence on 12 medical conditions. The conditions included depression, heart attack and blood disorders.

They say some of these genes may have also been beneficial to this species as they moved out of Africa, but became harmful over time.

The study is to be published in Science.
