Firefighters face many challenges fighting Strawberry Point fire

Posted: Updated:

A fire rips through an Eastern Iowa small business overnight, putting firefighter to the test while they worked more than two hours.

The fire was reported at the 'Back Home Country Cookin' restaurant in Strawberry Point.

Authorities haven't confirmed what caused this fire.

The restaurant has been a staple in the community for years.

People stopped by to observe whats left of the restaurant -- the icicles servicing as a reminder of how hard firefighters had to work to hose down the building.

Strawberry Point called in for backup from two other departments, and they took turns rotating so they wouldn't get frostbite.

"As any firefighter knows, once you open the nozzle you can't shut if off because it would freeze," said Assistant Fire Chief Dean Courtnage. "So the whole time our hoses were running so it wouldn't freeze -- it was definitely cold."

The fire department is strangely and luckily right next door, but you wouldn't have known it Saturday night.

The smoke was so thick, it took over the entire block.

"I live about three houses down, as soon as I went outside I could tell it was bad because I could hardly see from the smoke," said Courtnage.

Restaurant owner Brenda Landis said in a Facebook post she hopes to rebuild her restaurant and has maintained a very positive attitude.

She told KWWL she's overwhelmed, but extremely grateful for support she's been receiving.

This is the same restaurant Ted Cruz visited on his campaign tour on January 9th.
