Iowa man found competent to stand trial in mother's death

LE MARS, Iowa (AP) -- An Akron man charged in the death of his mother has been found competent to stand trial.

The LeMars Daily Sentinel reports that Iowa Third Judicial District Court Judge Steven Andreasen found Jonathan Neunaber mentally fit to stand trial following a competency hearing.

Neunaber, of Akron, Iowa, has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in death of his mother, 80-year-old Esther Neunaber. Her body was found last July with the body of her husband, Donald Neunaber.

Prosecutors say that while Donald Neunaber died of natural causes, Esther Neunaber was beaten to death.

No trial date has yet been set.
