New, quieter wind turbine being tested in Iowa

EMMETSBURG (KWWL) -

Iowa is a leader in wind energy and now one Iowa community college has a one-of-a-kind turbine.

A vertical-axis turbine is being installed at Iowa Lakes Community College.

It's quieter than traditional turbines.

Experts say this kind of design could be marketed to smaller communities, individual farmers and businesses.

"The opportunity for us from a learning and potentially future work force development and training opportunity is huge," said Iowa Lakes Community College director of sustainable energy resources and technologies, Dan Lutat.

A German company made the turbine and chose Iowa as the testing site because of how much wind we have.
