Slick roads cause multiple accidents across the area

Posted: Updated:

Slick roads were to blame for several accidents across the area this morning.

Accidents left two dead and caused multiple injuries.

In Cedar Rapids, a police car responding to a five vehicle crash on Edgewood Road was in an accident of it's own sending one officer to the hospital.

A rollover crash happened near Greenhill Road and the exit ramp off 218 in Waterloo.

Police tell us a mom and her daughters were in the car and one of them had minor injuries, the accident was caused by an icy patch on the road.

Another slick roads accident killed a mother and her son this morning 5 miles west on Marengo on Highway 212.

According to the Iowa County Sheriff's Office, a mom and her two-year-old son were in the car when she lost control.

The car went into a ditch and hit a creek embankment, that's when the car caught fire and the two where killed..

Two people were seriously injured in Fayette County after an accident caused by frost.

The Iowa state patrol says frost on the road led to many of the accidents keeping them busy this morning.

"It was very deceiving the roads looked like there wasn't any ice on them but the frost that was set on the roads was very slippery and hard to see," said Darin Snedden, a Sgt. with Iowa State Patrol.

We're told whatever melted today is going to refreeze overnight.

The Iowa DOT tells us they prepped big highways such as I-380 last night leading in to this morning, and most of the issues today were on city or county roads.

The Iowa State Patrol says to especially look out for areas on bridges and overpasses as well as to not drive with cruise control on when it could be slick.
