Arrest made following June death at a Waterloo daycare

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: According to a criminal complaint, on June 17th, 2015 officers were sent to 1415 Bertch Avenue, Amy Hangartner's in-home daycare, for Brody Harrelson a one-year-old child who was not breathing.

The caller, Hangartner's 15-year-old daughter, stated that Brody had been in a car seat and had choked.

Waterloo Fire and Rescue arrived on scene, and Brody was unresponsive.

Brody was transported to Covenant Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Hangartner and her daughter were interviewed and admitted that Brody had been in a car seat which was located in a closet on the second floor of the residence. They both did not initially tell officers this was where Brody had been located.

Brody was not monitored or checked on for approximately two hours.

Hangartner also admitted that she had placed Brody in the car seat.

The daughter stated that Brody had not been completely strapped into the car seat. Brody had the strap fastened over his chest when he was placed in the car seat. She also stated that the strap had been up against Brody's neck as if he had slid down in the car seat.

While at the hospital, officers noticed marks around Brody's neck that were consistent in markings with the buckle and straps on the car seat.

Police say they are not sure if this was an accident or not.

Hangartner is now facing a charge of Child Endangerment Resulting in Death. Officers arrested her Wednesday.
