Iowa middle school student facing charges after allegedly bringing gun to school

SIOUX CITY (KWWL) -

A student is accused of bringing a gun to an Iowa middle school.

Police say the Sioux City boy is twelve years old and in the sixth grade at North Middle School. He faces a charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

Police say the student showed his friend the unloaded handgun on Monday. The friend told his parents who notified the school.

"We don't believe in the initial conversations that we had that there was the intent to bring a weapon to school to do harm to that student, to another student, to a staff member, anything like that," said Paul Gausman, Superintendent. "That doesn't make it any less serious to us."

The school district will make a final decision on the student in the next 45 days. For now, he's not allowed on campus.
