DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The Dubuque Museum of Art (DuMA) announced Tuesday the state's oldest cultural institution is now an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Smithsonian Affiliations Director Harold Closter said DuMA had been selected for the program because of the strength of its collections, operations and national accreditation through the American Alliance of Museums.

The museum joins the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque and the Putnam Museum in Davenport as the only active Smithsonian affiliated museums in Iowa.  There are fewer than 30 cities nationwide that hold this designation.

"We are thrilled and honored to join the Smithsonian Affiliates network," said DuMA Executive Director David Schmitz in a press release.  "This long-term partnership will enhance our exhibitions and programs, for the benefit of our community and region, and further establishes Dubuque's reputation as an arts and cultural destination."

The affiliation means DuMA will have special access to loans of artifacts and traveling exhibitions, including those drawn from the Smithsonian's holdings of American art.  It also allows them to participate in innovative educational and outreach collaborations, including curriculum development in schools, lectures, workshops and study tours.

The DuMA is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.  Find more information at www.dbqart.com.
