Two dead, three injured in early morning Fillmore County house fire

Two people have reportedly died and three people are hurt after fire broke out at a home north of Canton.

According to the Fillmore County Sheriff's Office, the blaze broke out just after 1 a.m. at a house on an Amish farm property near the intersection of County Road 21 and 130th Street.

Sheriff Tom Kaase says two people died in the fire. Two others were taken to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wis. with unknown injuries, and a third person went to the hospital for treatment later.

Neighbors who spoke with the family say the owner of the farm, Bishop Yost Hershberger, died in the fire. Another neighbor tells her one of Hershberger's sons also died.

Fire crews from Harmony and Canton battled the blaze well past 4:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but Sheriff Kaase urges families to follow safe practices when heating their homes.

"In cases where people have wood burners or fires to keep warm, those safety practices making sure that they're tended to and that chimneys are being kept clean, and to be constantly aware of the potential dangers," Kaase said.

The sheriff says those dangers are increased in severely cold weather.

State fire marshal investigators were on the scene Monday, trying to determine the cause.
