DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A joyous time for Dubuque's Muslim community -- they'll soon have a new sanctuary.

"We are excited to do this project right now...it's been a working progress for like six or seven years now," said Tri-State Islamic Center Treasurer, Idris Idris Cherqi.

After years of fundraising, they finally have approval to build a mosque.

Right now, about 60 people from various countries worship at the Tri-State Islamic Center in Dubuque. It's located in the basement of a commercial building. "Currently, the space we have now is too small...it doesn't meet our needs," said Cherqi.

The mosque will be able to fit up to 150 people.  The site is located on Dubuque's west end on the 4900 block of Radford Court. "Cause the community's kind of growing as we've seen  in the last 10 years," added Cherqi.

Although situations throughout the world have made some people not accepting of Muslims -- members say it's not the same here in Dubuque. "I think people here in Dubuque are more tolerant to other new cultures.  And so far, we have not had any problems with the Dubuque community," said Cherqi.

They say Dubuque has been open to their religion of peace.

Construction is starting in April for the mosque. Members say it should be done by the end of summer.
