Officials say North Liberty's community is growing.

A city news release said Monday that a special count by the U.S. Census Bureau preliminary shows the Iowa City suburb has more than 18,200 residents.

That's 1,200 more than city officials' estimated before undertaking the special census last fall.

The 2010 U.S. Census showed North Liberty had nearly 13,400 residents. That's a growth of around 4,800 residents in less than five years.

City officials say the U.S. Census Bureau will be sending a certified population count to the state, which result in per capita funding increases in state funding. For example, that could mean $500,000 a year more for road maintenance and construction in North Liberty.

The city says the special census cost about $280,000.
