NEW YORK (KWWL) -

This morning, 17 miners were rescued from an elevator at the deepest salt mine in the Western Hemisphere.

They got stuck at the Cargill salt mine in the central New York town of Lansing on Wednesday night.

The rescue operation lasted about 10 hours in the cold.

A basket brought the miners to the surface.

The Ithaca, New York Fire Department says it was a "positive outcome to one of the most difficult rescues in recent memory."
