Posted: Updated:

Today the body of 17-year-old Tanner Wymer was recovered from the Coralville Reservoir, according to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

Wymer was pronounced dead at the scene.

The recovery effort began at approximately 2:45 pm on January 3 following a report of two persons falling into the water when their canoe capsized.

One occupant, Michael Felton, 51, Solon, was able to swim to the shore and await rescue.  Felton was pulled from the water by neighbors and transported to UIHC by Johnson County Ambulance for evaluation and treatment.

Michael Felton was in the rear seat and Tanner Wymer sat in the middle of the Canoe.

It is believed the wind, waves, and current combined to cause the canoe to capsize.  Neither individual was wearing a flotation safety device and there were none in the canoe.

The recovery effort was a combination of multiple agencies:

The Solon Fire Department, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office, Johnson County Emergency Management Agency, Johnson County Metro Dive Team, Other agencies assisting in the recovery efforts included the Swisher Fire Department, North Liberty Fire Department, North Liberty Public Works, North Liberty Police Department, Salvation Army, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the  U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
