Veterinarian thinks abandoned ‘Smurf’ cat was used as living chew toy

Posted: Updated:

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — An eight-week-old kitten dropped off at a California animal shelter doesn't look like your average cat.

The shelter staff calls him 'Smurf' after someone dyed him blue.

Someone found the kitten in a cardboard box on the street. Animal shelter staff say he may have been used as a dog's chew toy because the kitten has puncture wounds all over his body.

'Smurf' will undergo surgery to repair his injuries. Caregivers also are washing and shaving him regularly to get him back to his natural color.

He's made friends with another kitten, and shelter staff say the two will be placed together in foster care.

Smurf's plight has drawn attention from around the world. The shelter has received emails and messages from people in Brazil, England and elsewhere offering to adopt the kitten.
