Study: parents play a vital role in reduction of teen violence

LOS ANGELES (NBC) -

New research suggests parents may play a vital role in reducing teen violence. The findings come from researchers at Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute, and will be published in Journal of Child and Family Studies.

Nearly a quarter of teens in the study had been involved in a physical fight within the past year, with even higher rates among Latinos and African Americans.

Focus group interviews revealed parents' attitudes about fighting had a significant impact on their children's behaviors. That's why researchers say it is crucial to involve families -- and especially parents -- in violence prevention programs.
