Resolving to become a safer driver in 2016

Posted: Updated:

AAA suggests people across the state resolve to become safer drivers. Here's their tips on ways you can do that:

Resolve to drive sober, free from alcohol and drugs. Impaired driving kills more than 10,000 Americans every year.

Resolve to pay attention, free from technology, grooming, daydreaming and other distractions. Driver error is the leading cause of all fatal crashes.

Resolve to slow down. Speed increases impact forces and decreases stopping distances.
Resolve to move over for emergency vehicles. Responders on the side of the road need space to work safely.

Resolve to use your signals and headlights. Safe driving requires being visible to others and letting them know of your driving intentions.

Resolve to look out for motorcycles, bicyclists and pedestrians. Fatal crashes involving those groups are increasing dramatically.

Resolve to drive with a relaxed, positive attitude. Nothing good comes of road rage. Other people can make mistakes just like you.

Resolve to wear your seat belt. Not only will it keep you behind the wheel and in control, but it will keep you inside where your vehicle's safety features can do their job.

Resolve to be a good role model for the next generation of drivers. Children don't just start to learn to drive when they receive their permit; they watch and learn over the years.

Resolve to keep in mind driving is a privilege, not a right. The two-ton vehicle you're driving and the people around you should be treated with respect.
