Audit: $13,500 improperly used from Garwin ambulance funds

State auditors say more than $13,500 was improperly spent or unsupported by documentation from Garwin Ambulance Service funds since 2010.

An audit report released Wednesday says improper spending included cash withdrawals by Karen Boege, the ambulance service's former secretary and payments to her husband, Steve Boege, the former ambulance service president.

Garwin, a city of 525 people, is 70 miles northeast of Des Moines. The ambulance service is city operated but Karen Boege controlled three ambulance bank accounts which are now maintained by the city clerk.

State auditors say purchases from Walmart and a Tama florist were among those deemed personal in nature.

The Boeges resigned in February after the mayor requested a state audit.

No charges have been filed.

A telephone number listed for the couple has been disconnected.
