No Iowa college wrestlers hurt in deadly Vegas crash

Posted: Updated:

One person is dead and dozens more injured after a car slams into people walking the strip in Vegas and police say it was on purpose.

Nine of those injured are college wrestlers there for an annual competition, four Iowa college wrestling teams are there and many people were out walking the strip when this happened. One of them, was former Wartburg wrestling coach and Hall of Famer Jim Miller.

"There were a number of blocks on the strip that were totally blocked off for sidewalks and traffic. There was absolutely no traffic and it was obviously a crime scene," he says.

Police say Holloway allegedly barreled through crowds of people intentionally, killing one person and injuring dozens including nine college wrestlers.

Miller says, "It was a shock for everyone to hear that because everyone knew the news but just didn't realize that we had people involved in the tournament that were some of the victims. We had a moment of silence at the beginning of the competition and we talked a little bit about it but it was a pretty scary deal."

No Iowa college wrestlers were hit, but it was something that hit the competition hard.

Miller says, "We all know each other here and we are a wrestling family and then you just realize it could happen to anybody at any time... it hits close to home."

All of the nine college wrestlers have been released from the hospital and are expected to be okay.
