Seamstress battles cancer by expanding stuffed animal repair business

OAK ISLAND, N.C. (NBC) -

An inspiring woman in North Carolina is sewing some special stuffed animals back to health, while she also heals.

Sally Winey calls herself the "Teddy Bear Doctor," and is a world-renowned seamstress. Amazingly, Winey does most of her sewing on her grandmother's 1898 singer sewing machine.

But right now, Winey faces an extra challenge. She's battling breast cancer, following a diagnosis in April of this year.

"The whole time I was having chemo and radiation i just kept working on bears as much as I could," says Winey. "Some days I couldn't, but I'd just sit there and it gave me the drive to make somebody else smile."

Winey's currently in the middle of her holiday business rush, but this upcoming spring, she is planning for a more "realistic" stuffed animal hospital. She's buying out the space beside her, and will be equipping the new space with tiny gurneys and hospital beds.
