UPDATE: Downtown evacuation being lifted in Independence

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: According to Independence Police Captain Brian Brinkema, an elderly woman crashed her car into a gas main.

Authorities decided to evacuate for about an hour as a precaution, after the incident happened around 9 a.m.

Firefighters are now going around with special equipment to detect any gas in the area.

Local authorities ask if anyone smells gas, to report it to authorities.

Part of downtown Independence was evacuated this morning after a car hit a gas riser, causing a leak.

The car hit the pipe coming out of the ground along 1st Street E. after 9 a.m.

Crews evacuated a few blocks because of the gas leak.

The gas was shut off and firefighters say the public is safe. They also say it appears the gas pedal stuck in the car, which is why the driver lost control.

No one was hurt.

Police in Independence say they're evacuating the downtown area after a crash caused a gas leak on 1st Street East.

They say everything in that area has been shut down for now, including 3rd Ave to 5th Ave SE.

KWWL has a crew on the way and will bring you updates as soon as the information becomes available.
