IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Five graduates lined up to receive their diplomas for finishing Drug Treatment Court in Johnson County.

“If it weren't for the Drug Court people, I would not be here today," Treatment Court graduate Dawn Blaszczyk said. "It's true.”

All graduates completed at least 15 months in the program to combat their substance abuse issues, that they say were ruining their lives.

(sot) “I have 7 felony possession charges," Blaszczyk said. "Yeah, that's basically what brought me here.”

Graduates say the program wasn't easy.

Blaszczyk and her significant other entered the program together, and were not allowed to communicate for 9 months.

Graduates say if they hadn't gotten involved in the program when they did, they know they would be in a much worse place now.

“Oh, I would be in prison," Blaszczyk said.

The ceremony welcomed family and friends of graduates, and those still in the process of completing the program were also in attendance.

Graduates say they were glad to see them at the celebration so they could inspire them to push through the difficult program.

"I'm really hoping that my story, because it is so awesome, will bring them to know,” said Blaszczyk, referring to to her struggles.
