(KWWL) -
The nation's high school graduation rate is hitting a new high of 82% with Iowa topping the list of states.
Iowa had the highest graduation rate with 90% of students graduating high school in the 2013-2014 period.
The Education Department says though the rates are increasing, it still translates to 1 in 5 students in the nation leaving high school without a diploma.
The new data also finds black and Hispanic students are closing the achievement gap with white students; 72% of black students and 76% of Hispanic students graduated in 2013-2014, where 87% of white students graduated.
The District of Columbia has the lowest rate with 60% of students graduating.
