Sports Illustrated hands out first High School Athlete of the Year Award

Posted: Updated:

For the first time, Sports Illustrated will give out a High School Athlete of the Year Award.

A student will receive the award today, but not because of his work on the field, court or mat; but instead -- for his walking.

Hunter Gandee is a high school student in Michigan, and a wrestler.

Over the summer, Hunter walked more than 50 miles with his younger brother, Braden, on his back. Braden has Cerebral Palsy.

"I have had so much support, so many people have contributed to my efforts. I wouldn't have been able to do this alone. It wasn't just me carrying my brother, most people see my project as a boy who carried his brother but in reality we were carried by so many other people," Hunter said.

Hunter's story gained national attention, and he will receive his award today.
