Muscatine High School closing nursery due to lower pregnancy rates

MUSCATINE (KWWL) -

Muscatine has been handling high teen pregnancy rates for the last 25 years. Now, the numbers have turned.

There's been a dramatic decline of teen pregnancy in Muscatine.

In 2001, there were 97 teens who had babies in the county compared to 40 last year.

Because of that, the nursery at Muscatine High School will close at the end of the school year.

"We're down to one baby and that mother will be graduating at the end of the school year and we only have three teenagers who are pregnant currently in our high school," said Diana Broderson,Muscatine YMCA. "We're very happy to be able to say that we're not needed anymore."

The YMCA runs the nursery inside the school. Anyone who still needs help with childcare after the nursery closes can find resources at Trinity Public Health.
